The Toronto Blue Jays season came to an end last night as they will not be in the playoffs this year despite being in the same position as the Detroit Tigers on August 10th who are headed to the post-season.

On August 10th, both the Tigers and Blue Jays had a tiny 0.2% chance of making the playoffs. While the Blue Jays sat back and counted themselves already out, the Tigers but together an incredible last 2 months of their season and are now headed to the post-season. Both teams had a 55-63 record at that point in the year but unfortunately only one of these teams made the playoffs.
Making the postseason seemed impossible following a trade deadline fire sale, with FanGraphs putting their odds of making the playoffs at just 0.2% as of August 10. If you think that statement refers to your Toronto Blue Jays, you'd be correct.

But it also describes the Detroit Tigers, who punched their Wild Card ticket to October baseball following an improbable 31-13 (.705) run since then. Like Toronto, their record as of August 10 was an identical 55-63, putting both teams 10 games back in the Wild Card standings at the time.-Kime

Both teams were also sellers at the trade deadline but the Tigers seemed to have used it to their advantage while the Blue Jays did make some great moves but not enough to fight their way into a Wild Card spot.
Detroit was also a seller at the Deadline, dealing away the best available starter in Jack Flaherty, who had a 7-5 record with a 2.95 ERA over 18 starts and 106.2 innings for the Tigers. They also moved outfielder Mark Canha, catcher Carson Kelly and lefty reliever Andrew Chafin, who like Flaherty were all on expiring contracts. -Kime

This proves just how all these excuses by the team mean nothing as they could have fought harder to make it instead of sitting back and counting themselves out with 2 months left to go in the season.
