It has already been a record breaking season for Shohei Ohtani as he became the first player in MLB history to reach 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season. But he just broke another major record.
Leave it to Ohtani to just always keep breaking barriers and records like it is nothing, and that what he did yesterday (September 26th). When Ohtani faced off against the Sand Diego Padres, he hit a double to reach a milestone that has not been touched in 23 years. He became the first player since 2001 to accumulate 400 total bases which was last accomplished by 4 others in the same season, but... it was the steroid era.
Shohei Ohtani is the first player since 2001 to reach 400 total bases.
To top it off, with their 7-2 win over the San Diego Padres, the Los Angles Dodgers with the help of Shohei Ohtani booked their ticket to this years postseason as they will compete for a World Series.
For those who do not know what total bases are
Bases advanced, in a nutshell, are total bases: a single counts as one, a double as two, a triple as three and a home run as four. Attaining 400 total bases reflects uncommon power and relentless offensive production.
There are talks that the only two-way player in baseball may be able to return to the mound when the postseason commences, which would be a major piece to their run as starter Tyler Glasnow is out for the season with an injury.
