The Toronto Blue Jays have opened the season with a 13-15 record and may consider selling at this summer's trade deadline. Moving players on expiring contracts in exchange for prospects could be a logical step if the team continues to struggle.

Blue Jays star pitcher Max Scherzer could be on the move this summer.

Aaliyan Mohammed from The Sporting News writes that the Blue Jays brought in Max Scherzer on a one-year, $15 million contract hoping for veteran stability, but a lingering thumb injury has significantly limited his impact.
Given the short-term nature of the deal and Toronto's sluggish start, it's not surprising that FanSided's Edward Eng identified Scherzer as a potential trade candidate if the team shifts toward selling at the deadline.
"While Scherzer is 40, he can still be a difference maker when he's healthy. It's that last caveat that will likely determine what his future with the Blue Jays looks like. While a Schrezer return in the middle of the summer would be great if the Blue Jays were in the postseason hunt, it wouldn't mean as much if the Blue Jays are out of the hunt. If Scherzer returns when the Jays are on the outside of the postseason picture, he's a near-lock to get dealt." -Eng

Max Scherzer impressed during spring training with a dominant 1.38 ERA and 18 strikeouts, but his regular-season debut didn't go as smoothly, he allowed two runs over just three innings. That underwhelming performance was likely influenced by the thumb injury that had already forced him to miss multiple spring starts, raising concerns about how much he can contribute early on in the season.
"Not only is he 40, but he's also on a one-year contract. This wouldn't be the first time that happened in his career, as he was traded from the Mets to the Rangers in 2023 and helped Texas win its first World Series title." -Eng

Scherzer, an eight-time All-Star, three-time Cy Young winner, and two-time World Series champion, could become a key asset for a playoff contender if he stays healthy throughout the rest of the season.
