Update announced regarding the Blue Jays final offer to Vladimir Guerrero Jr
Ross Atkins told MLB insider Keegan Matheson that the final offer the team made Guerrero would have made him one of the highest paid players in the MLB and it would have been the largest contract in Blue Jays history.
Atkins says the #BlueJays made Vladimir Guerrero Jr. offers that would have been «record setting»
Asked what records he clarified:
«Blue Jays records. And would have been one of the highest-paid players in the game.»
This seems like a way of Atkins trying to put the blame of a deal not getting done on Guerrero since stating that it would have been the largest contract in team history does not mean much when it is George Springer's $150 million deal that currently sits at the top.
Guerrero made it clear from the beginning that the Blue Jays knew how much he wanted and he apparently even came down from his original asking price but the Blue Jays were still unwilling to match that.
Vladdy Jr admitted that he came down from his original asking price, and still, the Jays weren't even close
I just don't get it. Toronto offered $1.4+ billion to outside free agents, but aren't budging for a 25 year old homegrown superstar?
Hope he hits .340 with 40 tanks.
Clearly the Blue Jays were not serious about signing Guerrero because if they were, they would have made him a serious offer instead of all the lowball offers.
