During an interview with the Toronto Sun, Toronto Blue Jays president mark Shapiro revealed that the Toronto Blue Jays had gone well and beyond the comfort level financially to keep Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

He explained to the paper that the team had made every attempt to try to make him financially comfortable and gave him a number well above what the team was willing to pay for.

Shapiro may need free agency to gauge the true value of Guerrero Jr

«We have gone well past what our rational point of objectivity framing what the contract value is,» Shapiro told the Toronto Sun .

«And that is a recognition of how important he is to our fans.» Mark Shapiro

The past couple of weeks it's been long believed that the Blue Jays offered at least 14 years at $500 million to Guerrero Jr, as the team attempted to negotiate from an in-person deadline that was set by the superstar prior to the beginning of spring training.
That deadline had passed, and no deal was made.
Over the past week, several pundits felt that a potential deal was on the horizon and that the door is always open to close a contract and to secure their homegrown talent for many years to come.
«We'd like to keep him here,» Shapiro said. «I think finding that sweet spot could be done. It could have been done this spring. It could have been done in the off-season. Maybe it gets done at some point before free agency. Or maybe free agency defines what the spot is.» - Mark Shapiro

Free agency may determine what Guerrero's price will be for Blue Jays

Shapiro believes that free agency may be the only tool left for both the player and the organization to set his price and understand what it may take to sign him even though they were only $50 million apart over a 14- or 15-year deal.
«Maybe we both need for free agency to define that,» Shapiro said. «I remain optimistic, and will remain optimistic unless he signs with another team, that, because he wants to stay here, and we want to keep him here, that we'll get him signed.» - Mark Shapiro

It seems that as the story unfolds and as the season draws closer, there is a
possibility that a deal could be struck before Opening Day but if not this will remain over the Blue Jays season until it comes to an end and then Blue Jays fans will need to sit back and wait and see whether he remains with the team or heads off to another.
