Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro is optimistic that the team will eventually sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a new deal
Guerrero junior's contract extension has been an ongoing saga between the Blue Jays and himself has he imposed a self deadline prior to the beginning of spring training that no contract negotiations would continue after it began.
Over the last few weeks, details of the contract negotiations were leaked to the media, and they revealed that the team and Guerrero junior were only $50 million apart on an overall contract which would put him between three an $4 million per season difference.
The Blue Jays had offered him a $500 million contract well over 13 years to which Guerrero junior turned down.
Red Sox would love to pluck Guerreo Jr from the Blue Jays
After his deadline had passed, rumors began to float around Major League Baseball that the Boston Red Sox might be a choice for Guerrero junior that he will go to if he reaches free agency by the end of the season.
Many factors will continue to weigh in on this situation as it will come down to the Toronto Blue Jays season and how successful or not successful, they are and if they're not it's likely the Blue Jays will attempt to trade Guerrero junior if he does not have a contract in place.
The Blue Jays would not want to leave without anything in return to help restock their cupboards of prospects or even roster players who could help the team soon.
It's clear the Blue Jays would like to re sign him as the narrative and the messaging has been softening over the past couple of weeks. It remains to be seen if both parties can find a solution and put this to bed once and for all.
