Toronto Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins is on the verge of making another massive mistake with his most recent free agent target.

The Blue Jays have missed out on pretty much all of their free agent targets so far this off-season and are now so desperate that they are making offers to players that might end up being terrible signings.

Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins on the verge of making another terrible move in signing Alex Bregman

The Blue Jays along with the Detroit Tigers are set to be the top landing spots for free agent Alex Bregman according to MLB insider Jon Heyman which has both teams making him an offer near $200 million.
Bregman is set to earn close to $200 million when the bidding is done. Toronto and the Detroit Tigers are said to be the finalists, barring a surprise third entrant. The Boston Red Sox were interested in Bregman, but his price tag might be a bit too high. MLB Insider Jon Heyman projects Toronto or Detroit as the likely winner of Bregman's services. -Powell

The Blue Jays are desperate to make some big signings this off-season but bringing in Bregman on a deal worth $200 million when he has been on the decline over the last couple years seems like a massive risk.
While signing Bregman would serve a purpose, it's an awfully expensive point to make for a player trending in the wrong direction. By all accounts Bregman is a tremendous clubhouse leader. -Powell

Bregman has made it clear he wants a contract that is close to $200 million and while that might not be too bad for the 2025 and 2026 season, it is the last few years of his contract where the Blue Jays will be stuck massively overpaying.
But it'll also limit Toronto's spending moving forward, and their financial flexibility. Bregman alone doesn't make the Blue Jays a contender, it merely makes them more interesting - and that's the entire problem with Atkins strategy. -Powell

This situation seems incredibly similar to the one that they are currently in with outfielder George Springer but that does not seem to be setting off any alarms for Atkins.
