The Toronto Blue Jays seem to have spent the off-season chasing after free agents that signed elsewhere, the latest being Canadian pitcher Nick Pivetta who agreed to a deal with the San Diego Padres.

The Blue Jays had quite a bit of interest in Pivetta this off-season and despite him being at the top of their list of free agents at the end of the off-season, he decided to sign with the Padres.

MLB insider Jeff Passan announced late last night that the Padres agreed on a four year deal with Pivetta worth $55 million which also includes a pair of opt outs but the deal is still pending a physical.
BREAKING: Right-hander Nick Pivetta and the San Diego Padres are in agreement on a four-year, $55 million contract that includes a pair of opt-outs, pending physical, sources tell ESPN.
Nick Pivetta's deal with the Padres has opt-outs after Year 2 and Year 3. The deal will pay him a $3 million signing bonus and $1 million salary in 2025, $19 million in 2026, $14 million in 2027 and $18 million in 2028.
This could have been a solid addition for the Blue Jays, especially if they plan on moving on from starting pitcher Chris Bassitt this season but unless they are able to acquire another starting pitcher, they will likely keep him until the end of the year.
The Blue Jays off-season seems to have been full of misses as they have targeted almost every solid player that was available but only managed to close on a few.
This off-season was not as bad as last year but was still far from where they hoped they would be once Spring Training rolled around.
It is hard not to point the finger at Ross Atkins for all these mistakes when the issue had nothing to do with lack of funds but had everything to do with his inability to convince these players to come to Toronto.
