The Toronto Blue Jays missed out on free agent Corbin Burnes early this morning as he signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the reason behind him rejecting the Blue Jays offer has been announced.

The Blue Jays were said to have the highest offer on the table for Burnes which had most believe that they would land him in free agency but unfortunately that was not enough to persuade him.

Reasoning behind why Corbin Burnes refused the Blue Jays offer announced

Burnes decided to sign a six year deal with the Arizona Diamondback worth $210 million which was under both the Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants offer as well as below his target price.

This is a major issue for the Blue Jays and all Canadian sports team competing against American markets as the taxes in Canada are so high that an American team can offer much less money overall but it can end up being more at the end of it.
This is an incredibly tough blow for the Blue Jays organization who seem to be completely out of options in terms of bringing in pitchers this off-season.
The 2025 season is beginning to look just as dark as the 2024 season.
