The Toronto Blue Jays were looking at the possibility to add another starting pitcher this off-season which would have been Jack Flaherty but news broke last night that he signed with the Detroit Tigers.

The Blue Jays have been rumored to be interested in signing Flaherty since the beginning of the off-season and especially over the last few weeks as he was the top free agent left on the board.

The Tigers steal away Jack Flaherty from the Blue Jays and sign him to a two year deal

The Detroit Tigers announced late last night that they have signed free agent pitcher Jack Flaherty to a two year deal worth $35 million which will pay him an average salary of $17.5 million per season.
Right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty, one of the youngest starting pitchers and top arms left in free agency, has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $35 million deal with the Detroit Tigers. The news came late last evening. -Stack

The details in the contract were released as well stating that Flaherty will be paid $25 million the first season and will have an opt out in the second year but if he makes at least 15 starts in 2026, his salary will go from $10 to $20 million.
The contract, which includes an opt-out after 2025, will pay him $25 million this upcoming season. Additionally, if he makes at least 15 starts this season, his 2026 salary can go from $10 million to $20 million (given he does not opt-out after the first year). -Stack

Flaherty would have been a great option for the Blue Jays starting rotation as he was one of the best free agent pitcher available this off-season as he finished the 2024 season with a 3.17 ERA.
It will be interesting to see if the Blue Jays have any interest in going back after another starting pitcher this off-season or if they are satisfied which their most recent addition of Max Scherzer.
