The Toronto Blue Jays are still looking to bring in some offense and it looks like Chicago Cubs Cody Bellinger could be a very real option for the Blue Jays.
The Cubs signed Bellinger to an extension last off season on a three year deal worth $80 million in after he won Comeback Player of the Year in 2023which has a player option to drop out of the contract within the first two years.
According to recent reports, Bellinger plans on opting out of his contract this off-season and will enter free agency giving up $27.5 million next season in 2025 as he wants to test the market.
Bellinger could earn $27.5 million in 2025 and $25 million in 2026 if he opts in. He had a better performance in 2023 compared to 2024, influencing his decision. -BVM
Blue Jays interested in bringing in Cody Bellinger
The Blue Jays could be interested in a player that could be used as an outfielder but that could also play first base when needed which Bellinger fits the criteria. They are also looking to add a solid hitter which Bellinger has been in the past and had a decent season this past year with 18 homeruns, 78 RBIs, .266 batting average and .325 on base percentage.
Bellinger's impressive 2023 season has prompted speculation that he may opt in for now and reassess next offseason. Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays are emerging as potential suitors if he opts out, seeking a versatile outfielder who can also play first base. His decision is expected shortly after the World Series concludes. -BVM
The former comeback player of the year could end up signing a deal anywhere between $20 and $25 million per season but we need to announce his player option before any offers can be made.
While Bellinger regressed a bit this past season, he put up great numbers in 2023 and could easily return to that play after playing 130 games in back to back seasons proving that he is no longer injury prone.
