The Toronto Blue Jays are already in need of some help in the outfield but with the most recent update on Daulton Varsho, they might need more than expected.
Blue Jays Daulton Varsho might not be ready for the start of the season
The Blue Jays seem to be already assuming that Varsho will not be ready for the start of the season in 2025 after undergoing surgery at the end of the 2024 season but an official timetable has not been set.
MLB insider Ben Nicholson-Smith reported a few weeks ago that Ross Atkins does not believe that Varsho will be ready to start the season but it does not seem like he should miss too much time.
At the start of December, Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith reported that Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins noted that «it could be unrealistic» for Varsho to be ready when baseball comes back. -Delaney
If Varsho is not ready for Opening day, the Blue Jays have a few options they could look at to replace him, one being Nathan Lukes who saw a solid amount of action last season.
Of the four players we'll look at, Nathan Lukes is the most realistic option for centre field if the Blue Jays go without Daulton Varsho. -Delaney
Another solid option could be prospect Jonatan Clase who was acquired in exchange for Yimi Garcia at the 2024 trade deadline as he did decent in the little bit of time he spent in the majors last year.
While there are other options such as Will Robertson and Steward Berroa as well, there is also a possibility that the Blue Jays land both Anthony Santander and Teoscar Hernandez this off-season which one of them could take Varsho's spot while he is out and will go to DH when he comes back.
Despite it being bad news that Varsho will not start the season will the Blue Jays, it is good that the team at least has multiple options to replace him.
