The Toronto Blue Jays signed George Springer to a $150 million contract and it looks like they are unfortunately stuck with him as they hope he turns his game around.
Most fans were surprised when the Blue Jays signed George Springer for so much money since he was signed to a six year deal at the age of 31 which most fans thought he would definitely not outplay this contract.
The first two years of the deal went according to plan as Springer continue to be a dominant player and even was named to the AL all-star team in 2022 but it has been down hill from there. Over the last two season, Springer's game has declined with this season being the worst of his career.
It looks like the Blue Jays are sticking to their guns as they do not want to admit defeat in trying to trade Springer since their return will be minimal and it will have them admitting that it was a terrible contract.
During Ross Atkins press conference, he doubled down on the whole Springer situation stating that he is showing all the right physical traits to be a great hitter and believes he will turn it around next year.
«I think George is still showing all the physical traits (of being an elite hitter),» Atkins said at his post-season media availability last week. «We're not seeing anything concerning in his swing, from swing metrics to scout's eyes, to coaches' eyes. Cognitively, we're not concerned.
While Atkins states the team is not concerned, it is hard to believe since a large chuck of their team salary goes to him as he is the highest paid player on the team with an AAV of $25 million.
Hopefully Atkins is right and Springer is able to have an incredible year in 2025.
