Toronto Blue Jays former pitcher Yusei Kikuchi signed a new deal with the Los Angeles Angels yesterday which is bad for the Blue Jays as his deal was higher than expected which boosted available pitchers price tag.
Former Blue Jays pitcher Yusei Kikuchi's new deal has now boosted other pitchers price tag
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, Kikuchi is set to make an average of $21 million per season over the next 3 years which has now boosted the fortune of similar pitchers but also the top pitchers on the market such as Max Fried and Blake Snell.
Kikuchi's $21M salary should boost the fortunes of frontline pitching comps, most notably Manaea but likely also Severino, Flaherty, Eovaldi, Pivetta and Buehler (Snell, Burnes and Fried will be well above of course)
Heyman notes that pitchers like Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, Jack Flaherty, Nathan Eovaldi, Nick Pivetta and Walker Buehler, who all had seasons and markets comparable to Kikuchi, should have their fortunes boosted by Kikuchi's deal. -TSN
This will affect the Blue Jays since they are currently in the market for a new starting pitcher and have been linked to some of the top free agents available such as Max Fried and Blake Snell who's price likely just went up after that deal.
Heyman adds that Blake Snell, Corbin Burnes and Max Fried, all considered to be a tier above Kikuchi and the others, should come in with deals well above that benchmark. -TSN
The Blue Jays desperately need an top tier starting pitcher and even if it ends up costing them more than expected they need to land at least one out of Max Fried, Blake Snell and Corbin Burnes.
