Former New York Mets interim general manager Zack Scott announced some massive news regarding the Blue Jays and Francisco Lindor yesterday during an interview.

According to Scott, the Blue Jays had a trade in place to acquire Lindor from the Guardians at the 2021 trade deadline as his contract was ending and he did not plan on re-signing in Cleveland. Apparently he would have signed a long term extension with the team as well if they acquired him at the trade deadline.
Former New York Mets (interim) GM Zack Scott recently revealed that star shortstop Francisco Lindor was almost traded to the Jays more than three years ago and likely would have also signed a long-term extension with Toronto as well in the process.-Eng

For some reason general manager Ross Atkins ended up shutting the deal down the deal possibly because they believed that Lindor would hit the free agent market that winter and they could sign him instead of having to trade away key players to bring him in.
Well the Mets took full advantage of that because they knew how Lindor would not last of the free agent market which is why they traded for him then signed him to a 10 year deal which has paid off as he continues to be a dominant force for them.
That was before Scott and the Mets swooped in to grab the four-time All-Star in January of 2021 in a blockbuster trade. The Mets believed that Lindor wouldn't have lasted until free agency the following offseason so they had to make the move to get him. They would then promptly follow it up by signing him to a 10-year extension a couple months later to firmly secure his services for the next decade. -Eng

Once again, Ross Atkins botched a major deal that could have been massive for the Blue Jays, especially their offense and would have likely be a difference maker over the past few seasons.
