Toronto Blue Jays catcher Brian Serven is no longer part of the team as his contract has ended and he has officially become a free agent.
Due to receiving multiple career outright assignments from the Blue Jays including a few this season, due to MLB rules, Serven is allowed to become a free agent which he has decided to do.
Free agency has begun for catcher Brian Serven, who's no longer a member of the Toronto Blue Jays organization.
The 29-year-old backstop - who'll turn 30 next season - officially elected for minor-league free agency on Tuesday, according to the franchise's transaction log. Players who've received multiple career outright assignments can reach the open market regardless of how much service time they've acquired. -Hall
Serven was outrighted off the Blue Jays roster on September 19th in which he ended up clearing waivers which has allowed to become a free agent.
After clearing waivers, Serven was outrighted off Toronto's 40-man roster on Sep. 19. Thus, he gained eligibility to elect free agency once the regular season concluded at the end of last month. He could still return to the organization on a minor-league contract.
The 29 year old could still return to the organization but would have to sign a minor league contract with the Buffalo Bisons.
When Danny Jansen was traded at the deadline, Serven took on a much bigger role with the team as Alejandro Kirk's backup but since the Blue Jays do not see him as part of the future of the team, he will likely sign elsewhere.
