Heading into Spring Training it was said that Bowden Francis and Yariel Rodriguez were competing for the Toronto Blue Jays fifth starting rotation spot but it looks like that is not the case.
Blue Jays pitcher Bowden Francis seems to have the fifth rotation spot and Yariel Rodriguez will be used as a back up option
MLB insider Keegan Matheson recently sat down with Francis to talk to him about his comfort level as a full on starter this season in which he said that he feels much more free than when he was pitching out of the bullpen last season.
Bowden Francis sounds very happy and comfortable building up as a true starter with the #BlueJays:
«I can be myself out there now. Being in the 'pen it felt a little more crunchy. I couldn't use my full arsenal. It felt rushed. It depends on your personality.»
Matheson later in the day cleared things up on social media for fans that thought Rodriguez and Francis were competing for the final spot, stating that Francis has the fifth spot and that Rodriguez will be an option if there are any injuries.
Francis is the 5.
Rodriguez is staying stretched out as the next option if there's an injury.
Even if the two pitchers were competing for the final spot, it is hard to believe that Rodriguez ever had a chance when comparing both of their performances from last season.
However, it will be interesting to see how Francis ends up doing this year after finishing the 2024 season as one of the best pitchers in the league.
