During the Blue Jays end of the year press conference a few days ago, general managers Ross Atkins too responsibility for the disappointing season but seemed to have gotten no consequences from ownership.
CEO Mark Shapiro announced that Atkins would be returning for the 2025 season but when he came out to speak to the media, Atkins took on the blame for not putting together a better team this season.
Atkins told reporters that he needs to do a better job of surrounding the Blue Jays strong core with players that could help them be successful but admitted to failing to do so last year.
«I need to be better and I have got to do a better job of building (the) team around a very good core that has been successful,» Atkins said Wednesday. «I'm committed to doing so.»
«We objectively thought that we had a team that was good enough to win the American League East and play in the post-season,» said team president Mark Shapiro, who confirmed Atkins would be back in 2025.
«I can't think of a bigger disconnect from expectations in the time that I've been here.»
It is great that Atkins finally took some accountability for the terrible 2024 season but at the same time it means nothing to the fans as they have heard similar speeches before.
At what point does Rogers steps in and decide it is time for some changes since Atkins and Shapiro have failed to achieve anything in 9 years with the team, even if they have been able to make the playoffs, it means nothing if you can't win.
