The Pittsburgh Pirates announced some awful news that has put them in serious hot water with baseball fans after deciding to DFA pitcher Rowdy Tellez.
The issue is not necessarily that they decided to Tellez but when they did it as the Pirates player was DFA'd 4 plate appearances away from a $200,000 bonus with only 6 games left in the season. Tellez was at 421 plate appearances this season and needed 425 to hit his bonus. Tellez' numbers have been above average over the last month which proves that this move is strictly financial.
Today, with just six games left, the Pirates DFA'd Rowdy Tellez, who has been an above-average hitter by wRC+ over the past month.
Coincidentally, Tellez's contract reportedly entitled him to a $200,000 bonus at 425 plate appearances.
Fans cannot believe the dirty move by the Pirates organization which is definitely not a good look heading into the off-season as it will make things much harder to sign free agents since players will not trust the front office.
That is absolutely dirty, he should file a grievance and he should win that money, there is zero excuse for letting them get away with that.
He will file a grievance and probably win. Pirates are a nonsense franchise and have been since the 90's.
Pirates have always been incredibly cheap. No one ever stays too long.
