After the worst statistical season of his MLB Career, former Cy Young award winner Justin Verlander has been left off the Houston Astros roster for their Wildcard series vs. the Detroit Tigers.
Justin Verlander did not make the Astros' Wild Card roster, per @Chandler_Rome
2024 is a season for veteran pitcher Justin Verlander to forget, it has been riddled with injuries and bad starts, with that, the Astros have elected to keep him on the bench for the first round of the playoffs.
Per MLB.com, the Astros are carrying a roster of 11 pitchers and 15 position players, and unfortunately, Verlander will be a member of the taxi squad for the first time in his MLB career. He still has a chance at getting in, only if an injury occurs.
Astros Dana Brown told the media that it was a hard choice to leave him off but it is what is best for the team right now, and Verlander understands that.
"Verlander is a professional," general manager Dana Brown said. "He's been in the game a long time. And, you know, ultimately, he wants to do what's best for the club. And so I thought that from talking to Joe [Espada], the conversation went very well."
In 17 starts this season, after repeatedly going on and off the injured list for an array of issues, he went 5-6 with a 5.48 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP and 74 strikeouts in 90.1 innings pitched.
Verlander disclosed that he made a major mistake in rushing his rehab and should have taken more time to heal before returning to play.
"I think I came back from the neck injury a little fast," he said, per ESPN. "Obviously I know the schedule, I know the calendar, and I want to be an asset for this team and to do that I need to be able to pitch and find out where I'm at. Obviously, the results have not been good, but there's nothing you can do besides trying to pitch."
Are you surprised the Houston Astros kept Justin Verlander off their Wildcard roster?
