Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer suffers setback in his recovery
Blue Jays' manager John Schneider suggested that Scherzer may have suffered a setback, noting that he has gone back to his home in Florida for some family matters and is scheduled to have his thumb checked out again by a hand specialist later this week.
The nagging thumb injury that has kept the 40-year-old veteran pitcher Max Scherzer out since his Blue Jays debut still isn't showing signs of improvement.
It's been over two weeks since his only, and brief, start with the team, and a comeback doesn't seem to be on the horizon.
Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun writes that it's been over two weeks since his only, and brief, start with the team and that a comeback doesn't seem to be on the horizon.
Here's what manager John Schneider had to say when asked about Scherzer's recovery on Monday.
«It's always a concern when you don't have them pitching for you. Fair to say the longer he is out, the longer it will take to get him back. But first and foremost, just want to get it right.» -Schneider
Longley also writes that's essentially been the story since Scherzer's Blue Jays debut on March 30, when he exited after just three innings, initially due to lat soreness, which was later linked to the thumb issue that's bothered him for the past few seasons.
"There may feel like a slight out-of-sight, out-of-mind element to Scherzer's status right now, but the longer his status lingers in uncertainty, the more there is an issue both with his potential return and with the immediate future of the Jays rotation." -Longley
Regarding the most recent setback, Scherzer received a cortisone shot in his right thumb in late March and started light throwing during the team's recent road trip through New York, Boston, and Baltimore. While it offered a small sign of progress, he still didn't feel ready to throw from the mound.
"Scherzer, who has been on the injured list since March 29, appears to have shut down any activity for now, pending the next set of evaluations. As a result, it's certainly looking like it will be a long road back with an uncertain time table at best." -Longley
Here's what Scherzer said when asked about his lingering thumb injury.
«I'm frustrated. I want to pitch and I know I can throw the ball really well. Unfortunately I've got an issue going on (with the thumb) and I've got to address this.» -Scherzer
Now, it's safe to assume that there's no longer an official timeline for his return.
