The Toronto Blue Jays starting rotation had a tough season in 2024 and Chris Bassitt was among those that had the hardest times which he opened up about in a recent interview.

Bassitt is headed into the final year of his contract with the Blue Jays and is hoping to come out of the game great this season which will hopefully lead to a contract extension with Toronto.

Blue Jays pitcher Chris Bassitt opens up about his struggles last season

During a recent interview, Bassitt spoke on why his 2024 season went so poorly and stated that his goal is to avoid all of those problems this year and ultimately have a much lower ERA.
Bassitt stated that he was trying too many different things last season, especially in the second half of the year and wants to focus on keeping things simple this season.
«I got away from that,» Bassitt said. «I was trying to figure out lefties and do too much stuff in the second half of last year. We were tinkering with things and it was a weird part of the year for all of us. It was about figuring stuff out and a lot of it just didn't work. I think me and [pitching coach] Pete [Walker] have a really good plan right now. There's still tinkering, but it's a lot more structured rather than throwing stuff at the wall and hoping it sticks.» -Bassitt

Blue Jays manager John Schneider also spoke about Bassitt in the same way stating that last season he found himself in a lot of deep counts and the team is hoping he can avoid that this season.
«We always talk about the number of pitches that he has and I think it's about honing in on three or four of them instead of five or six of them. That, and locating, being efficient. Last year, he fell into a lot of deep counts with foul balls and balls, things like that. He can stay on the attack and that's what we're looking for.» -Schenider

Despite turning 35 years old this year, Bassitt has proven that he still has a ton left in the tank and can still be one of the Blue Jays most consistent pitchers as last season was his first year with an ERA above 4.00 since 2016.
If the Blue Jays can get Kevin Gausman and Bassitt back to the top of their game this season, they will surely have one of the best starting rotations in the American league in 2025.
