The Toronto Blue Jays are still looking to add at least one starting pitcher to their rotation this off-season and there might be some interest in free agent Jack Flaherty.
Blue Jays could be interested in signing free agent Jack Flaherty
Flaherty is coming off a great season with the Los Angeles Dodgers as he put up a 3.17 ERAA in 162 innings pitched while also being one of their best starters in the World Series.
The former Dodgers pitcher does have some risks involved since prior to last season he dealt with many injuries and consistency issues. However, Flaherty was able to stay healthy last season which could mean he has finally offer come his series of looming injuries.
The case for Fried leans into his year-to-year consistency, while investing in Flaherty requires a belief that 2024's results reflect his true talent far more than his other recent work.
Between 2020 and 2023, Flaherty dealt with multiple injuries, pitching just 299 innings in four years and producing middle results in that time (4.42 ERA, 4.36 FIP). -Ashbourne
Flaherty is expected by most insiders to be able to land a contract of about 4 years worth $88 million which is a lot of money if he returns to be injured all the time but is a great deal if he continues to build off of last season.
Average FanGraphs' Contract Estimate: 4 years, $88 million ($22M AAV) -Ashbourne
This signing ends up being risky but could also be a great pay off for the Blue Jays if it ends up working out.
