Toronto Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk was snubbed by the MLB as he was not named as a finalist for a Gold Glove award despite an incredible season defensively.
Kirk took on a major role as the main catcher for the Blue Jays this season following the trade deadline where he played incredibly after Danny Jansen was traded to the Boston Red Sox.
Alejandro Kirk snubbed out of a Gold Glove award by the MLB
Kirk had an incredible season defensively putting up great numbers with a 0.991 fielding percentage and only committing 9 errors in 776 innings while also throwing out 31% of the 87 runners that tried to steal on him.
But one area of his game surely didn't suffer this year: with a dWAR of 1.4, fielding percentage of .991 and only 7 errors in 776 innings played at catcher, he again provided solid defence behind the plate. In fact, he threw out 31% of the 87 runners who tried to steal a base on him, up from his career average of 20% entering this season. -Kime
The Gold Glove finalist were named last night in which Royals Freddy Fermin, Mariners Cal Raleigh and Tigers Jake Rogers were named but Kirk's name was left on the list.
This will be the fourth straight year that the American League nominates only catchers that have never won a Gold Glove before making the winner a first time Gold Glove winner.
Tigers catcher Jake Rogers only ranked higher than Kirk in one category which was catcher blocking but in all other statistics, Kirk ranked higher which is why not having him there but Rogers is does not make any sense.
