The Toronto Blue Jays know that signing free agent pitcher Corbin Burnes is a must which is why they seem to be taking the New York Mets Juan Soto strategy and refusing to be outbid.
The Blue Jays are taking the Mets Juan Soto approach on Corbin Burnes
According to recent reports, the Blue Jays are all in on Burnes and are willing to outbid all other interested teams to sign him in which their offer seems to be between 5-7 years for around $38 million per season.
Sources: #BlueJays have made it known to Corbin Burnes they want him and will outbid the rest of the teams for his services. #BlueJays are the favorite now for Burnes, after missing out on Soto. Sources tell me they "expect" the #BlueJays to offer him a 5+yr/38+mil AAV #MoccBomb
This mentality seems to be very similar to the way that the New York Mets owner Steven Cohen stated that he would not be outbid by other team's for Juan Soto and that he would surpass their offer no matter what.
For the time being, the Blue Jays seem to have the top offer on the table for Burnes which seems to be over $200 million but it looks like his top choice is the San Francisco Giants.
Recent reports state that the Giants offer is still below the Blue Jays but Burnes is holding out in hopes that they raise their offer but it looks like if they do, Toronto is willing to raise their offer as well.
The Blue Jays front office seem to be figuring out that if they want to land some of the top free agents, they have no choice but to outbid other team's as they are not currently a top destination such as New York and Boston.
Hopefully this strategy works for Toronto and they need to find a solution to their current issues after missing out on some of their top targets this off-season.
