The Toronto Blue Jays have missed out on the signing of another pitcher as Shane Bieber agrees to terms with the Cleveland Guardians.
As the Blue Jays continue to wait and see where free agent Juan Soto will decide to sign, another one of the top free agent pitchers is officially off the board.
The Blue Jays miss out on another pitcher as Shane Bieber signs with the Guardians
News broke this evening that the Cleveland Guardians and pitcher Shane Bieber have agreed to terms on a one year contract worth $14 million but also includes an option for the 2026 season worth $16 million.
Right-hander Shane Bieber and the Cleveland Guardians are in agreement on a one-year, $14 million contract that includes a $16 million player option for 2026, sources tell ESPN. Bieber underwent Tommy John surgery in April and is expected to return in the middle of 2025.
While this is another pitcher the Blue Jays have missed out on, it is not as disappointing as when Blake Snell decided to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers since Bieber is a much bigger risk.
Bieber had Tommy John Surgery during the 2024 season and is only expected to make a full recovery by halfway through the 2025 season if everything goes according to plan.
This means that the Guardians will be paying $7 million for Bieber just to continue to recover and hopefully his recovery goes according to plan and he is back somewhere around July.
While this is not the worst signing in the world to miss on for the Blue Jays, this should still be a wake up call that they need to start making moves.
