Ross Atkins speaks on being unable the Toronto Blue Jays to sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr

The Toronto Blue Jays were unable to come to an agreement with Vladimir Guerrero Jr before the deadline and GM Ross Atkins spoke to the media this morning before practice.
Prior to Atkins meeting with reporters, Guerrero held a press conference in which he broke the news that the two parties were unable to come to an agreement on a number for his new contract.

Atkins met with the media moment ago and spoke on the negotiations with Guerrero stating that they went down to the wire but were unfortunately unable to get a deal done.
The Blue Jays GM stated that he was very disappointed that they were unsuccessful in this pursuit but it looks like the two parties were simply too far away on a contract extension number.
Ross Atkins on not managing to extend Guerrero: "Obviously very disappointed. We worked very hard. The motivation is still there. Confident that every thought, idea we had, every dollar that we had was communicated. But we're obviously disappointed to not have gotten that done."
Was the gap bridgeable, or was there no pathway to a deal?
"I'm confident that we exhausted the communication, the ideas, the thoughts and communicated every dollar and felt that Barry and Vlad got to the point that they were comfortable as well. It just wasn't close enough."

"It just depends on how you define close, that's too big of a word to talk specifically about," replied Atkins. "I'm not comfortable talking about numbers."

This is horrible news for the Blue Jays as they seemed to have wanted to sign Guerrero but for some reason did not want to raise their offer to make sure a deal got done.
Toronto will not have to compete with other powerhouse organizations such as the New York Mets, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox to sign Guerrero next off-season.
