In a recent interview, Joey Votto did not hold back his comments and was straight to the point about his decision to retire from the game of baseball.

Votto had an unbelievable 17-year MLB career and after playing most of the season in the Minors for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, he decided to hang up his cleats. His comments on the decision were very candid.
"I was washed," Votto said Friday on the "Dan Patrick Show." "I was done probably last year at some point. But I am the one that has to make that decision."

While Votto was in the Minors, he realized he just did not have the same drive and love for the game he once did and he took that as his decided factor that it was time to retire.
"It wasn't until the other day when I didn't want a plate appearance," Votto said. "When the coach was, like, 'Do you want this at-bat?' And I was, like, 'I don't.' And I've never had that. I've always had a direction. I've always been, like, 'I'm going that way.'"

"I'm sitting on the bench in Buffalo, passing on a plate appearance" Votto said. "And guess who's sitting beside me. (Blue Jays legend) Devon White. And he said to me, 'So, what do you think you're going to do?' And he was talking about my hitting style. Like, what adjustments do you think you're going to make? And I go, 'I think I'm done.' And he goes, 'You mean retire?' And I go, 'Yeah, I think I'm done.'"

You see this time and time again, when an athlete does not have the same mindset they once did when they were younger and there is a lack of desire to get better and train, they take that as the biggest indicator that it is time to hang em' up, and that exactly what Votto did.
We wish nothing but the best for him in his well deserved retirement.
