News was announced this afternoon that former Toronto Blue Jays catcher Carlos Perez signed a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs.

Things still seem to be pretty quite on the Blue Jays major league signing front but minor league deals linked to the Blue Jays have been all over the news whether is is them signing a player or one of their former players signing a deal.

Former Blue Jays catcher signs minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs announced late this afternoon that they have signed former Blue Jays catcher and journeyman Carlos Perez to a minor league deal to give them more minor league depth after trading Matt Thaiss.
The Chicago Cubs have signed a Triple-A depth catcher to replace Matt Thaiss, who was traded to the White Sox. Per the team's transactions log, the Cubs signed Carlos Perez to a minor league deal. -Taylor

Perez is now 34 years old and has seem to some time in the majors throughout his career but has spent the bulk of it in the minor including the entire 2024 season with the Oakland Athletics Triple-A team.
Perez, 34, has appeared in parts of five big league seasons, though he spent all of 2024 playing at Triple-A in the Athletics' system (hitting .260/.344/.544/114 wRC+). His metrics in the big leagues are that of an average catcher, and his career spanning 16 years and 8 different organizations suggests that he's probably pretty good at working with a pitching staff. A good guy to have in the organization. -Taylor

The 34 year old was part of the Blue Jays organization for 5 years between 2008 and 2013 but never made it to the MLB before they decided to trade him in a big minor league just before the trade deadline to the Houston Astros.
While he career is coming to an end and the chances of him getting a call up to the big leagues is slim, if enough injuries happen he would be the fourth man in line to make the jump.
