At Just 22-years-old, Jared Jones's career is off to an electric start, silencing all that have doubted him.
@JaredJones17's MLB career is off to an incredible start 👏
In his last start after the Pirates have tried to manage his arm health, struck out 10 Colorado Rockies in an almost near perfect 78 innings as he earned the 1-0 win.
He impressed all with 100mph fastballs and a nasty slider/change-up combination that left the Rockies either swinging and missing or looking back at home-plate umpire in shock.
"Obviously, I've had a short leash before, and that was to protect me," Jones said. "Having him let me go out for the seventh, yeah, it pumped me up."
Pirates Manager Shelton didn't anticipate Jones' impressive progress when he arrived for spring training. Despite being a second-round pick in 2020 and having a solid season in the minors last summer, there were no signs of the remarkable leap to translate to the major league level.
Jared Jones is the first pitcher in Pirates history to record an outing of:
7.0+ shutout innings 1 or fewer hits allowed 10 strikeouts Zero walks
When asked about his remarkable season so far he said that:
"I'm just going out there and doing me," he said. "I'm sure I've had some spurts in my career where I've pitched just like this."
He has surpassed expectation so far, and what is even more exciting is that they have another young arm and top prospect in Triple-A in Paul Skenes who can only add to this electric pitching staff.
