Toronto Blue Jays owner makes bold statement to fans after Vladimir Guerrero Jr signing
It was a great day for the Toronto Blue Jays organization and baseball in Canada as Vladimir Guerrero junior officially signed at a press conference his new 14-year contract to which Rogers communication chairman Edward Rogers made a bold promise.
As the ink dried, Rogers spoke about what will come next for the Blue Jays now that Guerrero junior has been signed long term which will be a World Series championship returning to Toronto.
Rogers bold promise to make Blue Jays a true contender to win
«The World Series championship coming back to Toronto,» would likely do the trick, Rogers said. «But we strive every year and with Vlad at the front of that, we're closer.» Edward Rogers
The Blue Jays are facing a unique situation regarding their salary levels over the next two years.
The team is slated to have $120 million of payroll that will open as several prominent players within the organization will become free agents.
Names like Bo Bichette, George Springer, Chris Bassitt, Max Scherzer, are a few names that will be available for free agency and have significant payroll attached to their names.
It's too early to speculate on which names would remain in which names would be let go as the season has just begun but as the season wears on and depending on how the Blue Jays fair in their season it's possible some of these names could be on the block for trade.
Guerrero Jr loving life now with his new contract
Guerrero junior has been with the organization since he was 16 years old when former general manager Alex Anthopoulos signed him.
During the weeks leading up to the regular season and within spring training Guerrero junior had made it clear that he wants to remain a Blue Jay for life even though contract talks seemed to be impossible to bridge.
Without Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the Blue Jays' competitive window would have collapsed as early as next year. So, by locking down the 26-year-old to a $500-million extension, the club set a new baseline moving forward.
With that now behind him, he has hopes at his best friend Bo Bichette will find his way to a new contract with the Blue Jays long term where they can live out their dream of winning a championship together in Toronto.
For the time being, no contract talks have been ongoing between Bichette and the Blue Jays but if his numbers continue to climb and the season goes well, there's a strong possibility that he could be signed sooner rather than later.
