The Toronto Blue Jays are still in need of a starting pitcher to add to their rotation and it looks like there is some interest in Canadian free agent Nick Pivetta.
The Blue Jays have some interest in Canadian free agent pitch Nick Pivetta
MLB insider Brian Murphy stated that the he believes the Blue Jays will end up landing Nick Pivetta this winter as he fits their needs and would not cost them too much.
Murphy believes that the Blue Jays could land Pivetta by pushing the homecoming angle and would benefit from his coming to Toronto as it would allow them to push Yariel Rodriguez to the bullpen while improving their rotation.
"The homecoming angle would be a sweet story, but the 31-year-old Pivetta would also allow the Blue Jays to push (Yariel) Rodriguez into a swingman role and give them a bit of insurance with Bassitt slated to hit free agency after next season." -Murphy
Pivetta has been in Boston for the last 4 years and has been consistent in his time there despite not putting up incredible numbers he has had a stable ERA around 4.00 while finishing the 2024 season with a 4.14 ERA.
"Pivetta, a native of Victoria, British Columbia, isn't a flashy add, but his 30% strikeout rate and 22.8% K-BB rate since the start of 2023 each rank fifth-best in MLB," Murphy said. "His ERA was once again above 4.00 last season, but his expected ERA was a stellar 3.51." -Murphy
Clearly Pivetta is no Corbin Burnes but he could still bring some stability to the Blue Jays starting rotation which is what they are in need of right now.
Fans are hoping for Toronto to bring in a stronger arm than Pivetta but if all else fails, he could definitely be a solid back up option.
