The Toronto Blue Jays are predicting to cut ties with star pitcher Max Scherzer at the end of this season, after sustaining a thumb injury earlier last week.

For a team that finished last in the American League last season, fans are concerned that too much money was spent on an veteran player who is already dealing with injuries this early on in the season.

The Blue Jays are already questioning if signing Max Scherzer was a mistake

Jackson Roberts from The Sporting News writes that the Blue Jays will now have a major payroll crunch heading into 2026 if they decide to part ways with Scherzer.
Three-time Cy Young Award Max Scherzer signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Blue Jays this winter, and has already been dealing with injuries. On Monday, FanSided's Zachary Rotman predicted that Scherzer would be on his way out of Toronto after the season, whether he retires or simply signs elsewhere. Scherzer dealt with a thumb issue for much of spring training, and in his regular season debut with Toronto, he departed with a lat issue. He later wound up revealing that the lat issue was a result of his ailing thumb forcing him to overcompensate, putting his lat in danger, Rotman wrote. -Roberts

When healthy, the three-time Cy Young Award winner is one of the most dangerous pitchers in the MLB.
Scherzer, 40, has a guaranteed plaque in Cooperstown someday. He's an eight-time All-Star and ranks 11th on the all-time Major League Baseball strikeout list. But he's only been able to take the ball 10 times since the start of last season. -Roberts

There's no timetable for Scherzer's return but fans are optimistic that he'll be back in action sooner than later considering that he's already resumed throwing on Monday.
If Scherzer can remain healthy throughout the season, there's no doubt that he'll play a big role in getting a young Blue Jays' team back into the win column.
