Yankees interested in Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer to replace Gerrit Cole
The Yankees signed Cole to a massive four year deal this off-season worth $144 million but he will unfortunately not play for them in 2025 as he is set to undergo Tommy John surgery.
According to reports, the Yankees would be interested in Scherzer since he is only on a one year deal and would be exactly what they Yankees need for the 2025 season to replace Cole.
On Monday, ESPN's Buster Olney named several potential Cole replacements for the Yankees. Among them, he listed Toronto Blue Jays free-agent acquisition Max Scherzer, a 40-year-old former three-time Cy Young who signed a one-year, $15 million contract this winter. -Roberts
Despite the Yankees wanting Scherzer, there is only two ways they can get him, wait and see how the Blue Jays do at the start of the season as they might want to move seems piece if they get off to a slow start.
"If the Toronto Blue Jays struggle in the first half, they could be a key source for all kinds of needs, including starting pitchers," Olney wrote. "(Max Scherzer might) draw interest if Toronto ever looks to rebuild and, in the Yankees' case, is willing to deal within the division." -Olney
The other option would be making them an over the top offer that they would be too ridiculous to walk away from for a pitcher on a one year deal.
The Yankees were the favorites to win the division once again this season but things have drastically changed in the last 24 hours.
