Juan Soto met with Yankee brass yesterday in California and by all accounts, it did not go well. Hal Steinbrenner couldn't get the PowerPoint presentation to work and had to wing it. Soto left the meeting unimpressed and underwhelmed.
The Blue Jays leap frog the Yankees in the Juan Soto sweepstakes
After the Yankees meeting going so terribly with Soto, many insiders such as Jon Heyman believe that the New York Mets and the Blue Jays are now the top two teams to land Soto with the Mets still being the top choice.
'I'd say the Mets, followed by the Blue Jays, would be my guess today!'
@JonHeyman tells @BrandonLondonTV which clubs have the early edge in the Juan Soto free agency sweepstakes
Even if the Blue Jays are in the top two spots to land Soto, it will not be an easy task to beat out the Mets as Steve Cohen has mentioned that he refuses to be outbid by any team for Soto.
Mets planning to offer Juan Soto $660M. Yankees unlikely to match that. Blue Jays might raise, but keep in mind the Rogers' money and all income for the Jays is at 72c to the US dollar being in Canada. More tax too. Cohen has said privately he won't be out-bid, and would counter.
If the Blue Jays end up raising their offer up to the Mets level, it will come down to where Soto prefers to go and New York probably has the upper hand since they had a much better season than the Blue Jays in 2024.
