The Toronto Blue Jays seem to still be trying to figure out what to do with Vladimir Guerrero Jr but it looks like they are in serious trouble as his asking price has now made a serious jump.
The Blue Jays do not seem sold on signing Guerrero at simply any price which is why
there have been a lot of trade rumors going around since if they plan on losing him to free agency, they might move him before then.
Update announced regarding Vladimir Guerrero Jr's asking price
The Blue Jays were unable to come to an agreement with Guerrero this off-season which seems to have put them in a tough spot since his asking price has now gone up.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, he believes that
Guerrero is now looking for close to $600 million which only Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto have signed for more in the history of the MLB.
"At this point with Soto at $765 million, I think it's probably gonna have to be in the sixes to sign [Guerrero]," Heyman said. "I think probably $600 million, plus." -Heyman
During a Bleacher Report stream on Feb. 26, Jon Heyman of the New York Post said the likely number for Guerrero at this stage is $600 million. -Athlon
If this is truly the case and the Blue Jays are serious about bringing him back, this means that they will be paying a $150 million penalty or close to it for not getting a deal done with Guerrero before the start of Spring Training when he was looking for $450 million.
Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins clearly overplayed his hand when it comes to the Guerrero negotiations because even if they end up bringing him back in free agency, they will certainly be paying much more than if they signed him this off-season.
The way the Blue Jays have gone about the Guerrero situation seems very bizarre since they continue to state that they want him back but are doing everything possible to make sure that they are at risk of losing him.
Guerrero stated that he is open to accepting an offer throughout the season but they will need to significantly raise their offer if they want to persuade him away from entering free agency.
