Latest update for Bo Bichette and the Toronto Blue Jays does not look good
The Blue Jays have enjoyed mostly positive momentum early in the 2025 season, boosted by Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s $500 million extension.
However, considering the Blue Jays finished last in the division and were sellers at last year's trade deadline, they're still far from being in the clear and might just be looking to deal their star shortstop.
On Tuesday, ESPN's David Schoenfield identified Blue Jays star shortstop Bo Bichette as a possible early trade candidate.
Jackson Roberts from The Sporting News writes that the Blue Jays are still competing in the highly challenging American League East and currently sit in third place. If they slip out of playoff contention, they could become intriguing sellers at the trade deadline.
"Bichette, 27, is currently hitting .313 with only a .396 slugging percentage. But even with zero home runs, he's got a 120 OPS+ and 0.7 bWAR through 20 games, which makes him an extremely valuable player." -Roberts
Roberts also writes that it's reasonable to expect
Bo Bichette to rediscover his hitting power throughout the season. He posted three straight seasons with 20 or more home runs from 2021 to 2023, including a career-high 29 homers.
ESPN's David Schoenfield also had this to add when talking about Toronto's possible early trade candidates.
"In the Blue Jays' case, things would really have to go sour for them to surrender at the trade deadline, but they do have two interesting would-be free agents in Bassitt (off to a tremendous start with a 0.77 ERA through four outings) and Bichette (hitting for average but not any power)." -Schoenfield
Toronto might not be planning a major offer for Bichette in free agency after committing big money to Guerrero, particularly if they doubt his long-term future at shortstop.
It's fair to question whether he could be traded, though likely only if the Blue Jays are fully out of playoff contention. We'll have to wait and see.
