Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins made it clear in his press conference that he does not think the Blue Jays need a big time home run hitter to change their offense.
During last week's press conference, Atkins was asked about adding a big time bat this off-season which he stated was the low hanging fruit and that they need to look for more out of the hitters they bring in that just home run hitters.
«Power is the low-hanging fruit to add,» Atkins said when asked if adding some thump to the lineup would be a priority this off-season to help return the team to a legit run-scoring threat. «I think in today's game, you also have to be cognizant of strikeouts whenever you do (add a power bat.)»
Atkins does make a point when it comes to strikeouts as the Blue Jays need to pay attention to bringing in bats that have a good eye but having another hitter apart from Guerrero in the lineup that swing for the fences would not be a bad idea.
The Blue Jays general manager did at least admit that have good hitters is important in the playoffs but did not mention what the Blue Jays for bringing in those hitters would be. he did state that he believes Toronto is still a top destination from free agents even if the team has not signed any big free agents in a few years.
«I think that's something that we have been working very hard to understand, what that means in the playoffs, as well,» Atkins said of the overall importance of loading up a lineup with power hitters. «It's clear that contact is exceptionally important in the playoffs. That's proven. So, balancing that with power additions is obviously very important.»
Once again, the end of this press conference left fans with even more questions as Atkins failed to give any real answers once again which is why the Blue Jays have been a laughing stock of the MLB lately.
