The Toronto Blue Jays ended up landing all-star Anthony Santander this off-season but apparently the Kansas City Royals attempted to lure him away prior to the deal but ended up failing.

The Blue Jays brought in a big time hitter in Santander this off-season, signing him to a five year contract worth $92.5 million which will pay him an average salary of $18.5 million per season.

The Royals tried to lure Anthony Santander away from the Blue Jays

Santander got quite a bit of attention this off-season from a few teams but from the beginning the Blue Jays were seen as the favorites to land him as they were the most motivated out of all the teams to get a deal done.
According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, the Royals tried to mess up that deal with before the signing by making Santander an offer for $66 million over three years with an opt out after the second season.
The Kansas City Royals offered Anthony Santander a 3 year $66 million dollar deal with an opt out after year 2 according to Ken Rosenthal.
While the deal is on a smaller term, there was probably some serious interest from Santander as he would have been making more money per season with an average salary of $22 million but would have had less security.
After missing out on Santander, the Royals decided to take some of that money from the offer and sign former Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Carlos Estevez to a two year deal worth $22 million.
Before signing Carlos Estévez, Royals pursued Anthony Santander.
Despite there being a possibility of this going poorly, the Blue Jays ended up victorious and landed Santander on a long five year deal keeping him in Canada for the next little while.
