Things are finally starting to pick up this off-season and signings are starting to take place as we have seen a few former Blue Jays sign new contracts and now Boyd has done the same.
Former Blue Jays pitcher Matthew Boyd has signed a contract with the Cubs
Boyd was drafted by the Blue Jays in the sixth round of the 2013 MLB draft but only ended up pitching 6.6 innings for them in 2015 before being traded to the Detroit Tigers as part of the package that brought David Price to Toronto.
Since moving on from the Blue Jays Boyd has bounced around a few teams and spent last season with the Cleveland Guardians but only played a portion of the season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery but still put up an impressive 2.72 ERA.
He went 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA over 39 2/3 innings in eight starts for Cleveland in '24. Boyd made three postseason starts for the Guardians during the club's run to the 2024 American League Championship Series. -MLB.com
The former Blue Jays pitcher has agreed to a two year deal with the Cubs which is worth $29 million for an average salary of $14.5 million per season plus $1 million in performance bonuses.
The Cubs and free-agent left hander Matthew Boyd reached an agreement on a two-year deal on Monday, according to a report from MLB Network insider Jon Heyman. The deal is reportedly worth $29 million for two years, with $14.5 million a year, plus $1 million in performance bonuses ($500,000 each year). -MLB.com
Cubs add Matt Boyd
This seems to be a large contract for a player that has battled a ton on injuries in his career, playing his last full season in 2019 for the Detroit Tigers but the Cubs seem to believe he will be able to continue to put up the same numbers he did last year.
As more players have been signed over the last few days, the Blue Jays have still yet to announce their first major league signing.
