Report confirms Chris Bassitt's future with the Toronto Blue Jays looks very bad
The Blue Jays have enjoyed mostly positive momentum early in the 2025 season, boosted by Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s $500 million extension and a solid start above .500.
However, considering the Blue Jays finished last in the division and were sellers at last year's trade deadline, they're still far from being in the clear and might just be looking to deal one of their star pitchers.
On Tuesday, ESPN's David Schoenfield identified veteran Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt as an early trade candidate, despite being one of the best players on the team to start the season.
Jackson Roberts from The Sporting News writes that at 36 years old,
Chris Bassitt is turning back the clock to his 2021 form with the Oakland Athletics. This season with the Blue Jays, he's tallied 31 strikeouts over 31 2/3 innings, and his remarkable 1.03 FIP currently leads all qualified pitchers in the MLB.
"In the Blue Jays' case, things would really have to go sour for them to surrender at the trade deadline, but they do have (an interesting would-be free agent) in Bassitt (off to a tremendous start with a 0.77 ERA through four outings)." -Schoenfield
The three-year, $63 million deal the Blue Jays gave Bassitt may have seemed like an overpay at times, but his current performance is proving it to be well worth the investment writes Schoenfield.
"The most ideal way to pay it off would be for the vet to lead his team into the postseason, but recouping big-time prospects in a deadline trade would still be a win if that's what it comes to in Toronto." -Schoenfield
The 2025 MLB trade deadline is set for July 31 at 6pm ET.
