Former Toronto Blue Jays players Josh Donaldson and Russell Martin just won a court case against the Canada Revenue Agency over multi million dollar tax bills.
Donaldson and Martin have not played for the Blue Jays in quite a long time as both players are now retired but have been battling with the CRA with their teax bill from almost 10 years ago.
Former Blue jays Josh Donaldson and Russell Martin win legal battle against the CRA regarding taxes
The two former Blue Jays were in a tax battle with the CRA regarding their bills for the 2015-2017 seasons but a judge announced yesterday that they won and dropped their bills by a considerable amount.

It was announced that by winning the case, Martin's tax bill between 2015-2017 dropped down to $4 million while Donaldson's bill from 2016-2017 dropped down to $2.6 million.
In total, Martin's total taxable income in Canada dropped by roughly $4 million for 2015 to 2017, whereas Donaldson's was reduced by a total of roughly $2.6 million for 2016 and 2017. -Nardi
These two former Blue Jays winning this case is great for Canadian sports teams that are looking to bring in foreign athletes as it shows that there are ways around the protecting their earning as non-residents.
As first reported by National Post last year, Donaldson and Martin's cases raised a common issue that tax experts argued could have a chilling effect on Canadian sports teams' ability to attract top international athletes: namely, how non-resident top earners can protect their income and mitigate Canada's higher income-tax rates. -Nardi
Hopefully this court case proves to professional athletes that they can play in Canada and not have to pay these higher income tax rates but they might also be scared from having to battle the legal system.
