Blue Jays former closer Jordan Romano finally speaks on Toronto's decision to non-tender him
Romano finally spoke on the Blue Jays deciding to non-tender him in a recent interview stating that he has no animosity towards the team and understands that it is just a business.
The Blue Jays former pitcher stated that he believes that the reason behind the non-tender decision might have been because the team was worried since he had not pitched yet prior to the non-tender deadline.
«The only thing was (that) before the tender deadline, I hadn't (thrown) on the mound. So maybe that was something - they didn't feel comfortable because I hadn't been off the mound yet, they hadn't seen me at full strength yet.» -Romano
Romano then stated that he pitched in the bullpen on December 6th and that it was probably it was the hardest he has ever thrown in a first bullpen and that he sent that data to all the interested teams in free agency which is when interested in him really picked up.
«I threw a bullpen (on Dec. 6) and it went really well,» Romano said. «It was probably the hardest I've thrown in a first bullpen in my life. I was really pleased with it. We sent that data off to all the teams that were interested and it really picked up from there.» -Romano
According to reports, there was about 12 teams that were interested in Romano after he released the data and that the majority of teams were willing to offer him more than the $7.75 million that the Blue Jays turned down.
Approximately a dozen teams reached out to Romano, most of them offering as much or more as the Jays declined to pay him. After a few days, he signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies that guarantees him $8.5 million with an extra $500,000 if he pitches at least 60 innings. -Wilner
Hopefully this move does not come back to haunt the Blue Jays but it is looking like Romano might be on his way back to his old self.
