Former Toronto Blue Jays catcher Brian Serven has reach an agreement with the Detroit Tigers on a minor league deal.

Serven spent only 1 season with the Toronto Blue Jays after being claimed off waivers from the Chicago Cubs in January 2024 but elected to enter free agency at the end of the season.

Serven has been bouncing around the MLB for the past 8 years as he has yet to truly settle down playing for 4 different teams in that time but spending the majority of that time in the minor leagues.
The Tigers are the fourth professional organization of Serven's eight-year professional career. Drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the fifth round of the 2016 MLB Draft, he spent six seasons in the Minor Leagues with Colorado's affiliates before making his MLB debut in 2022. Serven played in 62 games for Colorado that season and hit .203 with an OPS of just .593, but he did hit six home runs and 16 RBIs in 205 plate appearances. -Brauner

Most believed that the Blue Jays would bring Serven back since they have so little catcher depth after trading Danny Jansen away at the trade deadline but it looks like they decided not to make him an offer which the Tigers capitalized on.
The good news is that the Blue Jays did announce last night that they signed former Miami Marlins catcher Ali Sanchez to a minor league deal which gives them a little more depth at the catcher position within the organization.
Hopefully Alejandro Kirk will not get injured this season as the Blue Jays will likely be heavily relying on him since they do not have a real secondary option.
