As the 2025 season gets underway, new details are emerging about the Toronto Blue Jays' offseason moves.
While there was widespread speculation that the team aimed to make a splash in free agency to bolster the roster around Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette, the end result was underwhelming. Despite the buzz, the only major addition they came away with was outfielder Anthony Santander.
An MLB insider revealed on Sunday that the Toronto Blue Jays did not hold any talks with star third baseman Alex Bregman during the offseason.
Brad Wakai of Toronto Blue Jays On Si writes that Pete Alonso was reportedly another player that Blue Jays were interested in, but nothing came of it before he decided to sign a deal to return to the New York Mets.
"There was also previous reporting that suggest Toronto was going after star third baseman Alex Bregman, an addition that would have upgraded their infield defense and overall offensive profile." -Wakai
However, Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY has something else to say about those reports regarding
Bregman.
"The Blue Jays did make a strong offer to Alonso, just as they did [Juan] Soto, but despite erroneous reports, they didn't make a single offer to Bregman, let alone engage with him." Nightengale.
Bregman was a name frequently linked to the Blue Jays during the offseason, with some even suggesting Toronto was close to landing the two-time World Series champion at one point. That makes the insider's claim, that the Blue Jays never even initiated discussions with Bregman, all the more surprising.
Wakai also writes that it also serves as a reminder of how unreliable free agency reporting can be. With so many rumors circulating, it's often difficult to separate fact from fiction. Agents may leak information to boost their clients' market value, while teams might spread selective details to strengthen their negotiating position.
"The Blue Jays will have to deal with the star competing against them in their division this year." -Wakai
Bregman ended up signing a short-term deal with a high average annual value, along with an opt-out clause that gives him the flexibility to re-enter free agency after this season in pursuit of a longer, big-money contract.
Given that Toronto reportedly wasn't interested in the first place, any future rumors connecting the Blue Jays to Bregman should be viewed with skepticism, especially in light of what Bob Nightengale just reported.
