What's new, losing 8-3, Blue Jays drop series finale to the New York Yankees as they move to 4-6 on the season.
Giancarlo Stanton smashed a resounding tiebreaking grand slam in the third inning, propelling the New York Yankees to an 8-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. This win marked the Yankees' eighth triumph in 10 games to kick off the season.
Stanton's has been striking out a ton, but when he connects, does he ever hit it a long way. His 417-foot blast off Bowden Francis (0-2), extended the Yankees' lead to 5-1. In the eighth inning, Anthony Volpe showcased his offensive prowess with three singles and successfully stole two bases before crossing home plate on a base hit by Oswaldo Cabrera. Additionally, Juan Soto contributed a sacrifice fly during the same inning.
It is hard to make a thorough recap of the Jays' offense and pitching, as one of their 3 runs was off a walk to catcher Alejandro Kirk when the bases were loaded. Bowden Francis struggled on the mound, not like he got much help from renowned umpire Angel Hernandez, but ultimately was pulled after 3 innings and giving up 5 runs.
Toronto manager John Shneider was asked about the performances by the Blue Jay ptichers and specifically Francis:
"The walks hurt, especially against that kind of lineup, so he just lost the zone and a middle-middle two-strike pitch to Stanton." - Shneider
The Jays only accumulated 5 hits total throughout the game, continuing the signs that the bats are nowhere close to where they need to be to have any success against any team right now. Yes, poor pitching and bad umpiring didn't help their cause, but you cannot win games unless hits WRSP are taken advantage of. But it is hard to even get there when hits in general are few and far between.
The Blue Jays are heading home to take on the Seattle Mariners today, hopefully the home crowd can give some life to the Blue Jay bats.
